Kham Phaeng’s Freedom: Unchained Elephants’ Second Elephant Rescue in Thailand

Unchained Elephants Strikes Again: Inspiring Change Through Second Elephant Rescue in Thailand!

Unchained Elephants did it once again! In an extraordinary turn of events and a relentless group effort, on December 12th, 2023, Unchained Elephants, Somboon Legacy Foundation, and us made an elephant rescue possible. We wanted to cover this story because we are so proud to have been a part of this incredible animal rescue mission. It’s incredible what impact we can truly make when we all work together. Unchained Elephants’ second elephant rescue story is not only inspiring but also highlights the remarkable community supporting Unchained Elephants. Together, we’ve successfully unchained and relocated Kham Phaeng, an almost toothless 54-year-old female elephant in dire conditions, who was still working in the harsh and relentless trekking camp in Pattaya. So, travelers, we invite you to continue reading this blog and reach out to Unchained Elephants to be a part of their next elephant rescue mission in Thailand.

Joining Efforts to Unchain Kham Phaeng from a Lifetime of Suffering

The collaborative mission to unchain Kham Phaeng from a lifetime of suffering began on November 3rd, 2023. In an alliance between Unchained Elephants and the Somboon Legacy Foundation, Dr. Chayanan, a dedicated local Thai animal activist, played a crucial role in bringing Kham Phaeng’s distressing story to light. Despite facing numerous obstacles, both organizations worked tirelessly to initiate and execute the challenging rescue mission. The shared goal was clear – to unchain Kham Phaeng from the cruel bonds of chaining, starvation, and health issues. Not to mention a timer set in place, with only 30 days to make this happen. $28,286 USD was required to secure her freedom and facilitate her relocation to Somboon Legacy Foundation for the essential care she desperately needed.

Kham Phaeng: A Tale of Resilience Amidst a Lifetime of Suffering

Kham Phaeng’s story is yet another sad truth that many travelers do not know about. Like many other captive elephants in the tourism industry, Kham Phaeng was tortured, kept in unacceptable conditions, and worked until she was no longer able to continue, only to be left abandoned and forced to fend for herself. Only when she was left to fend for herself was she doing so while chained up…

Kham Phaeng was chained up on both her front and back legs in an elephant trekking camp in Pattaya. Visibly emaciated, almost toothless, and grappling with feet issues, her situation was far from what anyone could have imagined. And so the race against time began, with Unchained Elephants and Somboon’s team both moving ahead to make this rescue and relocation possible for Kham Phaeng.

Unchained Elephants’ Bittersweet Triumph: Our Second Elephant Rescue

Despite receiving heartbreaking news on November 12th of the passing of their first elephant rescue, a bull elephant named Kanoon, they continued to push on. The rescue mission gained momentum, and on December 4th, a pivotal moment arrived when we realized that we could make Kham Phaeng’s rescue happen. Undeterred by not fully completing the funds needed for Kham Phaeng’s rescue, we pressed ahead. The remaining funds, primarily allocated for logistics, were anticipated to be covered during the rescue and relocation days.

Kham Phaeng's Journey to Freedom: A Unified Rescue Mission

On December 11th, the three teams from different cities made their way to Pattaya for Kham Phaeng’s rescue and relocation. The much-anticipated day of December 12th finally arrived, and everyone was filled with excitement. Strategically divided into teams for paperwork, logistics, and relocation, the unified effort was in full swing. By midday, Kham Phaeng was in the truck and on the road. What was most fascinating is that as soon as she got onto the truck, she stopped swaying! Finally, at 8 pm at Somboon Legacy Foundation, Kham Phaeng was unchained!

Kham Phaeng’s First Moments at Somboon Legacy Foundation, Unchained & Free

Upon arriving at Somboon Legacy Foundation, Kham Phaeng’s initial hesitation blossomed into curiosity and joyful exploration. Those first steps on solid ground marked the start of a brand-new chapter, and our amazing community played a pivotal role in making this journey possible.

A huge shoutout to the incredible community, standing strong with us every step of the way, ensuring the successful rescue of Kham Phaeng. Despite the challenges we faced, the unity and compassion shown during this second elephant rescue mission highlight the incredible impact of collective action. And in honoring the memory of Kanoon and celebrating Kham Phaeng’s newfound freedom, we want to express our gratitude for the heartwarming support that broke chains and inspired change. The success of Unchained Elephants’ second elephant rescue mission is a testament to the strength of the community bonds and shared commitment to the well-being of these majestic beings. Together, we made a difference, and the journey continues.
